Living in Russia With Your Russian Wife: The Paperwork, Step by Step

You are married, or you are getting there. The next question always arrives in the same order: where are we going to live? Nine clients out of ten first think of bringing her home, to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada or Australia. That is legitimate and well documented, and I have written up the full spousal visa route. But it is only half the question. The other half nobody puts in front of you: living in Russia with your Russian wife is possible, and since 2024 the door is wider open for a Western man than it has been in twenty years.

I have lived in Moscow since 2021. I went through these procedures for myself, and I see our clients go through them. Here is what is true in 2026, without fantasy and without discouragement.

Three ways to live together, not one

"I'll bring her over" is one answer out of three. Each one fits a different life plan, and the choice is made by two people.

She moves to your country. The most signposted route: marriage, spousal visa, residence permit. Count twelve to eighteen months before she works normally, longer for a US spousal visa. It is the right answer when your work is at home and she is ready to restart her professional life elsewhere.

You move to Russia. Faster than people assume, and lighter on paperwork than the reverse. It is the right answer when you work remotely, when you are near the end of your career, or when she has children at school she does not want to uproot.

You alternate. The most common choice among our clients in the first two years, and by far the most underestimated. There is a document made for it, and almost nobody knows it exists.

The document nobody mentions: the family visa

Once you are married, your wife can apply for you to receive a one-year multiple-entry private visa. Not a thirty-day tourist visa, not an e-visa, which is closed to US, Canadian, British, Australian and New Zealand passports anyway: a one-year visa, unlimited entries and exits, with no cap on the length of stay. The 90-days-in-180 rule that constrains ordinary visas does not apply.

Three things make it remarkable:

  • No administrative invitation to obtain. Your wife writes the application, signed in front of the consular officer or certified by a Russian notary if she is in Russia.
  • Ten working days of processing at the consulate.
  • It is extended by a year from inside Russia, without leaving the country, provided you file twenty-five working days before expiry and both come to the counter.

It does not give you the right to work in Russia. It gives you the right to live there, come and go freely. For a man who keeps his business at home and wants to spend six months a year with his wife, it is exactly the right tool. The full procedure is detailed on our guides site.

The three-year marriage rule for a residence permit

The family visa covers the back-and-forth. To reside, you need a residence permit, and the first step is the temporary residence permit, the RVP (разрешение на временное проживание), valid three years.

Until January 2025, marriage to a Russian citizen opened that permit outside the annual quota the day after the wedding. That is over. Since 25 January 2025, a marriage-based RVP requires at least three years of marriage on the day you apply, to a Russian spouse who lives permanently in Russia. The rule comes from Federal Law No. 358-FZ of 26 October 2024, passed against sham marriages.

SituationMarriage-based RVP
Married under three yearsNot yet
Married three years or moreYes, outside quota
Common child born in the marriageYes, no waiting
Marriage dissolved laterPermit cancelled

The same law cancels the permit if the marriage it rests on is dissolved or declared void. And the marriage route requires the Russian language, history and law exam from this first stage.

Key takeaway: marrying a Russian woman no longer opens a residence permit straight away. Without a common child, count three years of marriage, and the language exam.

Decree 702: the faster door for Western men

There is a second door, and for most of our English-speaking clients it is the better one. Decree 702 on "traditional values", signed in August 2024, lets nationals of 47 countries and territories obtain a three-year RVP outside the quota and with no language exam. The list, adopted by the Russian government in September 2024, includes the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and almost the whole European Union.

You need neither a Russian wife nor an employer. It is the fastest route available today, and nothing about it is confidential: Moscow immigration firms handle American, British, Australian and European files every week.

In plain terms: a married Western man does not have to wait three years. He can enter through Decree 702 and let the marriage timeline run in the background.

Key takeaway: for a man from the US, UK, Canada or Australia, Decree 702 is usually faster than marriage. The three-year rule then stops being a wall and becomes a detail.

The November 2025 trap, and why it does not close the door

A decree of November 2025, Decree 821, caused a lot of noise and a lot of misreadings. You read everywhere that a man aged 18 to 65 would have to sign a military contract to obtain a Russian residence permit. That is wrong at the temporary permit stage.

The text only concerns the permanent residence permit and citizenship. The temporary permit, the one that gives you three years of legal residence, is never mentioned. What closes is the floor above, and only on certain grounds.

In practice, for a man aged 18 to 65: three years of legal residence remain available with no condition of that kind. Beyond that, you need either a basis the decree does not target, such as highly qualified specialist status, a Russian degree, investment, documented Russian ancestry or the new status of foreigner of interest to Russia created in December 2025, or you apply for a new temporary permit when the first one expires.

I say this because I have seen clients drop a project on the strength of a badly read article. The legal detail is here.

What it really costs

Russian state fees rose sharply on 27 July 2026. Here are the orders of magnitude for one person, excluding flights and housing.

ItemAmount
Family visa, 12 months6,000 ₽ state fee
Mandatory medical examabout 7,000 ₽ a year
Notarised translations5,000 to 9,000 ₽
Temporary permit (RVP)15,000 ₽ state fee
Permanent permit30,000 ₽ state fee
Full legal support, optionalfrom 90,000 ₽

A temporary permit file put together on your own comes to about 32,000 roubles, a few hundred dollars. With legal support, about 122,000 roubles. Money is not what blocks people. Preparation is.

What I see among our clients

Three mistakes keep coming back, and none of them is legal.

Deciding alone. Choosing the country is the couple's first real decision. A man who announces his choice instead of building it with her creates a grievance that will resurface three years later.

Underestimating the language. Decree 702 waives the exam at entry, not at the next step, and the marriage route demands it from day one. Those who start Russian in the first year get through. The others discover the requirement two months before filing. It is a subject I have already covered, and it matters more here than anywhere.

Confusing a visit with settling. A one-year visa exempts you from no local obligation: a medical exam within thirty days of entry since June 2026, registration at your place of stay by the host, and an annual notification once you hold a residence permit. Nothing insurmountable, but nothing automatic either.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a Russian residence permit as soon as I marry a Russian woman?

No. Since 25 January 2025, a marriage-based temporary residence permit requires three years of marriage, unless you have a common child born or adopted in the marriage. Decree 702 is the faster alternative for US, UK, Canadian and Australian nationals.

Can I live in Russia on the family visa alone?

Yes, for as long as you renew it. The one-year multiple-entry visa has no cap on days spent in Russia, but it does not allow you to work there.

Does Decree 702 require a Russian spouse?

No. It is based on nationality, not on marriage. Being married simply adds a second route later on.

Where to start

In order, without skipping a step:

  1. Talk about the country before the papers. Where do you want to live, and why. The procedure follows from the answer, never the other way round.
  2. If you alternate, get the family visa. Ten working days, an application signed by your wife, and you stop counting your days.
  3. If you settle, pick your door: three years of marriage, a common child, or Decree 702 straight away.
  4. Start Russian in the first year, not the third.

The rest is administration, and administration can be organised. What cannot be organised is a couple who never had that conversation.

Our clients often arrive with the question "how do I bring her over". They sometimes leave with a different, better one: where do we want to build. The strategy call exists to ask that question at the right moment, before the wedding sets a choice that was never discussed. If you would rather start in writing, write to me: I answer myself.
