Why I Don't Offer Free Discovery Calls — And When I Do Anyway
Almost every matchmaking agency offers a free first call. It's become an industry standard. We made the opposite choice. Here's why — and what it says about how we work.
The problem with open discovery calls
A free call available to everyone attracts two types of people: those who are serious, and those who are curious. The problem is that the curious ones represent 80% of requests. The result: we spend time trying to convince people who aren't ready, at the expense of those who are.
In a high-end matchmaking agency, the team's time has value. Every hour spent qualifying a non-serious prospect is one less hour dedicated to a client who trusted us and invested in their project. This is exactly what volume-based agencies do — and it's the model we refuse. To understand why some agencies operate differently, read our comparison of dating sites vs matchmaking agencies.
What the Diagnostic really represents
The $99 Diagnostic is not a financial barrier — it's a signal of commitment. $99 is nothing for someone ready to invest in their life project. But it's enough to filter out people who "wouldn't mind trying" without real conviction.
What the Diagnostic delivers concretely:
- One to two hours of in-depth work on your profile, situation, and expectations
- An honest analysis of compatibility between your profile and what we offer
- A clear recommendation: either we work together, or we tell you why it wouldn't make sense
- Intrinsic value: this session has value regardless of what you decide afterwards
If you decide to continue with the agency, the $99 is credited toward Matchmaking. If you decide not to continue, you leave with a clear analysis of your relationship situation. Either way, you haven't wasted your time. For full details on our pricing and the complete journey, see the dedicated page.
When I offer a free conversation anyway
There is one case where I make an exception. When someone writes me a well-constructed email — not a two-line quote request, but a real message describing their situation, their project, their questions — I take the time to read it. And if the project is serious and the questions deserve a conversation, I offer a brief phone call with no obligation.
This is not a structured offer. It's a case-by-case decision, based on the quality of the message received.
In practice: if you're in this situation, write to contact@valentin.love. Describe yourself in a few paragraphs. Don't ask for a call — explain your situation. If your profile matches what we accompany, you'll get a response. The compatibility test can also help you quickly assess whether your project is realistic.
What this says about our approach
We work with men who have decided to take their life project into their own hands. Not with men who are still hesitating about investing. This difference in mindset changes everything about the quality of the support.
A man who paid for a Diagnostic, who took the time to present himself properly, who made the effort — that man is in a different state of mind. He's ready to work. And that's how we get results.
The financial filter is not there to exclude — it's there to select. The men who work with us are those who understood that their life project deserves a real investment. If you're in that mindset, the Diagnostic is made for you. If you're reading this and wondering whether to write — write.
